SPOT: Safe Prepared Off-Campus Tenants

Brand Identity, Print Design, Photography, Interactive Design

I worked with a team using Design Methodology to solve a problem in Cincinnati. We focused our efforts on the design and promotion of a user-friendly resource that would help students stay safe from fires in off-campus student housing near the University of Cincinnati. Our goal was to educate and bring awareness to fire safety in off-campus student housing.

I contributed largely to the team project in the research methodology, facilitating interviews and using research and strategy to develop our brand. Additionally, I created the logo and brand guidelines for our identity application. I took on the role of project lead on the poster application, developing a poster campaign from photographs that I took of students at their houses around campus. I also took on the role of lead interaction designer and created a website interface for our organization.

The Problem

Fire safety is an afterthought for students amidst the chaos of finding a suitable house or apartment. Factors such as affordability and location take priority, and students are often unaware of what to look for regarding safety.

SPOT Poster Campaign

The Poster Campaign was a vital application of the SPOT Brand, as it served as a primary advertising component promoting the SPOT Brand. The SPOT team worked together to concept a photographic strategy that would use the student as the primary subject. Each poster in the campaign features the student in front of his/her off-campus housing unit, holding an approved "SPOT"; advertising their involvement in the program and the safety they feel knowing that they are safe in their house.

SPOT Decals

Decals are a vital aspect of the SPOT Safe Housing process. Once a house has been SPOT-Approved, Landlords will be supplied with a kit containing one exterior decal to be installed near the front door, as well as a specified amount of interior decals to be applied to the approved fire escape windows.
